Calligraphy master Yoko Takenami leads an autumn-themed workshop in brush, ink, line, rhythm and composition. Participants will create a Japanese calligraphy piece on a shikishi board to take home.

Three workshop sessions

Choose from 11:00 to 12:15, 13:00 to 14:15 or 15:00 to 16:15 on Saturday 21 November. Each session explores autumn-related words and characters, different Japanese writing styles and the expressive qualities of brushwork.

Materials and experience

All tools, equipment and materials are supplied, and no previous calligraphy experience is required. Takenami is the author of The Simple Art of Japanese Calligraphy and has taught at institutions including the British Library.

Booking and age guidance

The Japan Society member and accompanying-guest early-bird rate is £20 through Sunday 11 October. The regular rate is £25, with non-member booking opening on Monday 12 October. Spaces are limited.

The workshop is suitable for ages 14 and over. Participants aged 14 to 15 must attend with a parent or legal guardian. Those aged 16 to 17 may attend independently if emergency contact details are supplied.

A full refund is available only when cancellation is received by noon on 9 November 2026. After that deadline, the organiser will attempt to resell the place and cannot promise a refund.
