A visiting Ise City programme brings the culture around Ise Jingu’s periodic shrine rebuilding to Cambridge. After an introduction to the city and shrine, participants make a Zai, the ceremonial baton used during the Okihiki procession that carries sacred timber for reconstruction.

Rebuilding, renewal and craft

Ise Jingu’s Shikinen Sengu rebuilds shrine structures on adjacent plots every 20 years before the sacred deity is transferred to the new home. The process preserves craft skills while expressing a Shinto tradition of spiritual renewal. The next rebuild is planned for 2033.

KAWANISHI Masahiko of Miyachu Ltd leads the hands-on Zai workshop after the cultural introduction.
